Northern Kentucky Societies

Three of the Kentucky C.A.R. societies located in Northern Kentucky met for a joint meeting and service activity on January 11, 2008. They gathered at the Cold Spring Applebee's for lunch, then went to the Fort Thomas Veterans Adm. Domiciliary for bingo and refreshments. It was a successful day with 7 C.A.R. members and 7 seniors present to help the 30 veterans with bingo. This is the 6th year that C.A.R. has done this activity. The societies represented were Jack Jouett, Jemima Boone Calloway, and Limestone Societies. They also brought Valentine cards to be given on their meal trays in February.

Limestone Society

The Limestone Society also held holiday meetings over Thanksgiving and Christmas weekends in Tompkinsville.  At these meetings, members learned about the Jamestown fort, Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island, Revolutionary correspondence, and documented the history of their society by working on some scrapbook pages.

John Finley and Limestone Societies

John Finley and Limestone Societies met on Nov.18th in Flemingsburg for their annual joint meeting and program on the National Project.  They viewed a video about events leading up to the Battle of Yorktown in 1781, learned about writing with a quill, and several members reported on significant people at the siege of Yorktown.  They acted out a version of the battle and lastly enjoyed snacks around a campfire.

Kentucky State Society

The Kentucky Society held its Fall Get-Away Meeting at Locust Grove in Louisville, Kentucky on Oct. 27, 2007.  After the board meeting, members and seniors enjoyed touring the grounds during the 18th-Century Market Fair.  They browsed the vendors' tents with traditional wares, viewed the unique early forms of entertainment, and visited the campsites of Revolutionary reenactors.  Even Daniel Boone and Simon Kenton were present and telling of their many adventures in early Kentucky!

Six local societies were in attendance at the KSCAR Summer Board Meeting and Workshop in Danville on Aug. 4, 2007.  State President Meredith Clouse shared with the group her plans for the 2007-08 State Project with the Ephraim McDowell House.  The project was officially approved with several ideas proposed to help raise the funds that will assist with renovations in the operating room of the historic home.

State Webmaster Sarah Green gave a presentation on proposed changes for the state web-site.  The membership approved obtaining a new domain for the web-site of www.kscar.org along with paying to take the advertisements off the site.  We will keep you posted in the near future when the changes are made.  And don’t forget, local societies are welcome to contribute writing, photography, and artwork to the state site which relates to the National Project, American Heritage (Junior Rangers) and American History (400th anniversary of Jamestown) programs.

Locations and dates were finalized for the Fall Get-Away and State Conference.  The KSCAR Fall Get-Away will take place on Oct. 27th in Louisville at Locust Grove during their 18th-Century Market Fair.  The 74th Annual State Conference will be held at the Pleasant Hill Shaker Village located just outside of Harrodsburg on Mar. 28-29, 2008.

State President Meredith led the group in leadership and team building activities.  The 15 members and prospective members enjoyed a game with hula hoops.  They later divided into small groups to work together on creating their own team identity and cheer!  Last, but not least, the teams had an enthusiastic game of ZONK.  The teams of the “Wildcats”, “Chickens”, “Oldies”, and “Eagles” competed to see who could answer the most questions related to the National Program Packet and Kentucky C.A.R.

After a delicious lunch at The Hub, members continued on to tour the Ephraim McDowell House.  They learned about his life and the significance of his work that greatly impacted the advancement of medicine.  Since this was across the street from Constitution Square, many of those present enjoyed visiting the log buildings and learning about the early history of Danville.

Kentucky State Society

The Kentucky Society was well represented at the 2007 Mid-Southern Region Meeting in Louisville on July 21-21.  Fifty members, seniors, and guests from the Bluegrass State were in attendance.  They enjoyed the amenities of the Galt House located downtown along the scenic Ohio River.  Two tours were arranged for those in attendance.  A pre-conference tour was taken of the National Headquarters of the Sons of the American Revolution.  The region meeting tour was of the Frazier International History Museum where members learned about weaponry throughout history along with viewing performances of a Patriot soldier at Trenton, Molly Pitcher at the Battle of Monmouth, and two signers of the Declaration of Independence.
